Summer in Berlin

For months after I unwillingly left Berlin to return to South Africa in 2013, I listened to this song by Alphaville.  The opening lyrics, 'this days an invitation/and it's just for you/you've got a reservation/for the 17th of June,' became my mantra, it inflected and reflected all my longing to return.   I relied on this song played at full blast in my ears at work, at home and when falling asleep in Cape Town, to return me in my mind to those iced streets of Berlin that was all I knew of the city at that point, for I'd only ever seen Berlin in winter.  That June of 2013 I returned to experience my first summer in Berlin, the long green drenched bright lit days whose luminous beauty further intensified my love for what was now irrevocably the place I had to live in.   I came back for good the following year, my flight from Cape Town landing at Tegel on the 17th of June.  The promise of that song had been fulfilled, and the opening sensous rythmn still forges a path through time for me, a reminder  of the lucky gateway that opened up to another place, to my heart, to Berlin.
